Digital routines without the stress

Streaming subscription rotation: pay for one service at a time

If several streaming subscriptions run side by side, you pay for all of them every month, even when you mostly watch one series. With a rotation, only one service is active at a time. This guide shows how to plan the switch, when to cancel and where the method reaches its limits in the EU and Switzerland.

The key point first

  • Keep only the service whose series you are watching now, and cancel it straight after joining: with Netflix and with Google Play subscriptions you can still watch until the end of the paid period.
  • Only rotate subscriptions without a minimum term, and put every end date in your calendar.

How does a subscription rotation work?

Each month gets one service: in January the one with the new crime drama, in February the one with the fantasy series, in March perhaps none. Months without any subscription save money too.

  1. List every streaming subscription with its billing date and how you pay: directly, through an app store, or through your mobile or TV contract. See Keeping track of digital subscriptions for a list without passwords.
  2. Collect the titles you want to watch on each service in its watchlist.
  3. Spread the services across the months. If a season is still coming out weekly, move that service further back.
  4. Join the service for the month, cancel straight away and note the end date in your calendar.

When should you cancel so you don't lose paid days?

Cancel straight after joining rather than at the end of the month. According to Netflix's help centre, you can keep watching after cancelling until your account closes automatically at the end of the billing period; the planned closing date appears in your billing history. Google Play also lets you keep using a cancelled subscription for the time you have already paid for.

Netflix (website or app)

  1. Open the Manage your membership page and sign in if needed.
  2. Tap or click Cancel.
  3. Under ‘Cancel’, tap or click Finish Cancellation. A confirmation email follows.

Logging out or deleting the app is not enough. Netflix states clearly that neither cancels your account, and Google says that uninstalling an app does not cancel a Google Play subscription.

What is kept when you come back?

According to its help centre, Netflix keeps your viewing history, recommendations, ratings, account details and game history for 24 months after your account closes, and you can rejoin at any time.

Netflix also recommends changing your password after cancelling and ticking Sign out of all devices, so nobody in your household can restart the account without your consent.

Netflix also offers one-month pauses instead of cancelling, up to three months in total, though not on every plan or payment method. Some Google Play subscriptions pause from the end of the current billing period for one week to three months, depending on the app and subscription.

Is an ad-supported plan worth it for a rotation month?

For a month spent on a single series, a cheaper plan with adverts can be enough. Netflix says most films and series are available on its ad-supported plan; titles that are not show a lock icon. Ad-supported plans are not available in all regions, Netflix adds.

Three questions before choosing an ad-supported plan for a month
QuestionWhere to checkWhy it matters
Is my series included? The title page; on Netflix a lock marks missing titlesOtherwise you pay for a month without it
How many screens and downloads? The plan overview in your accountMatters for families and journeys
Is it part of a bundle?Your mobile or TV contractAsk that provider whether an ad-supported plan is possible

If adverts are added to a plan you already have, or the price goes up, see Streaming price rise: accept, switch or cancel.

Where does a rotation reach its limits?

You can only rotate what you can end each month. The consumer advice centre in Hamburg notes that streaming subscriptions generally cannot be cancelled in the ordinary way during a minimum contract term. Give notice on an annual plan or bundle early, effective at the end of the term, and rotate the service only after that.

  • Bundle in a mobile or TV contract: sort out cancellation with the provider you pay.
  • App store subscription: if you paid in the app through Apple or Google, cancel in the store's subscription settings.
  • Free trial through Apple: Apple advises cancelling at least 24 hours before the trial ends if you don't want it to renew.
  • Withdrawal as an emergency brake: according to Your Europe, the 14-day right of withdrawal does not cover online content such as a film you have started streaming after expressly agreeing to lose that right.

Which rules apply in your country?

Germany and France require an easy online cancellation route for subscriptions taken out online. In the other countries covered here, check the route in your contract and the service's terms. Step-by-step help is in Cancelling a subscription online.

An example: Emma plans six months of streaming

Fictional example: Emma in Dublin has three streaming subscriptions, one of them bundled with her mobile contract, which runs until March. In autumn she mostly watched one series. She gives notice on the bundle straight away, effective at the end of the term, and rearranges the rest.

Emma's rotation plan (fictional)
MonthActive serviceWhat Emma does
JanuaryService A with advertsChecks that her crime drama is included and cancels the same evening
FebruaryService B, ad-freeWatches two saved-up seasons and cancels right after joining
MarchNo subscriptionUpdates her watchlists while the mobile bundle runs out
April to JuneA, then B, then COne month each; she now pays for C directly and monthly

From April, Emma pays for one subscription a month instead of three, and every end date is in her calendar.

Common mistakes

  • Deleting the app or logging out and assuming the subscription has ended.
  • Planning to cancel on the billing date and then forgetting.
  • Rotating an annual plan or a bundle with a minimum term.
  • Choosing an ad-supported plan without checking your series is on it.
  • Not changing the password, so someone in the household restarts the account.

Common questions

Do I get money back if I cancel right after joining?

Don't count on it, but with Netflix and Google Play you don't lose paid days either: both explain that you can keep watching until the end of the paid period, and neither mentions a partial refund. Under Your Europe's guidance, the 14-day right of withdrawal does not cover online content you have started streaming after expressly giving up that right.

Will I lose my profiles and history when I cancel?

Not straight away on Netflix. Its help centre says viewing history, recommendations, ratings, account details and game history are kept for 24 months after the account closes, and you can rejoin at any time. Other services have their own rules, so check their help pages before you cancel for the first time.

What if the streaming service comes with my mobile or TV contract?

Then the contract with that provider counts. The consumer advice centre in Hamburg points out that streaming subscriptions generally cannot be cancelled in the ordinary way during a minimum term. Give notice early, effective at the end of the term, and add the service to your rotation afterwards. If your Netflix account shows no cancel option, Netflix says you cancel through your payment partner.
