An everyday example
Fictional example: Tom, a teacher from Leeds, works in Graz for a year and travels on a KlimaTicket Ö Classic paid by SEPA direct debit. Two months before it expires, a letter invites him to renew. As he is moving back to the UK, he notes the objection deadline in the letter and sends a written objection through the contact form in good time.
He also opens his ticket in the ÖBB app in flight mode: it appears without a signal. His passport stays next to his phone, because the digital KlimaTicket is only valid with official photo ID.
Which rules apply to your pass?
Passes look alike on screen but follow different rules; your operator's terms always take precedence.
| Country | Pass and price | How it renews or ends | On your phone and at checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | Deutschlandticket: €63 a month since 1 January 2026; €66.80 from 1 January 2027 | Monthly subscription; give notice by the 10th to end it at the end of that month | Mobile phone ticket, e.g. in Deutsche Bahn's DB Navigator app |
| Austria | KlimaTicket Ö Classic: €1,400 a year for passes starting from 1 January 2026 | One year; with direct debit it renews unless you object in writing in time | Card or partner apps such as the ÖBB app; the digital ticket needs photo ID |
| Switzerland | GA Travelcard, 2nd class, adult: CHF 3,995 a year; CHF 4,095 from 13 December 2026 | Renews automatically; notice at least one subscription month ahead | SwissPass card or SwissPass Mobile in apps such as SBB Mobile, with official ID |
| France | Navigo Annuel (Île-de-France), all zones: €90.80 a month at 1 January 2026 fares | No minimum term; can be suspended at any time; 12th month free after 11 consecutive monthly payments | Can now be transferred to a smartphone |
| Italy | Trenitalia season tickets (abbonamenti) for regional trains, Intercity and Frecce | Frecce and Intercity delay claims within one year of the pass expiring | The app does not take claims for reservations linked to season tickets |
| Spain | Abono Único: €60 for 30 days, €30 for young people born from 1 January 2000 | Bought for one 30-day period at a time; start date no later than 31 December 2026 | Personal; carry your DNI or NIE |
Switzerland is not in the EU, so EU passenger rules do not apply there automatically; Swiss rules and the public transport sector's tariffs do.
How do you set the pass up on your phone?
Download the app from the official app store via your operator's website and sign in with the account that holds your pass. Then check where your valid ticket appears: in the app, on a card or both.
Wallet support varies: the KlimaTicket Ö, for example, is shown only in partner apps and not in a wallet. For the Swiss GA Travelcard you activate SwissPass Mobile in a compatible app such as SBB Mobile; it works offline, but you need to connect to the internet regularly (SBB recommends at least once a week), otherwise SwissPass Mobile is shown as invalid. The Navigo Annuel can now be transferred to a smartphone.
A quick test before your first journey
- Open the app and display the ticket while you are online.
- Switch on flight mode and open it again. If it does not appear, ask your operator how offline display works.
- Check the name, validity dates and class.
When do you need to cancel, and what about price rises?
Germany: the Deutschlandticket can be cancelled monthly; if notice reaches the seller by the 10th, the subscription ends on the last day of that month. From 1 January 2027 it costs €66.80. Deutsche Bahn asks existing subscribers to tell it by 30 November 2026 whether they agree; if they decline or do not reply, it cancels the subscription with effect from 31 December 2026. Other sellers send their own notices, so read yours in full.
Austria: two months before expiry, a renewal letter arrives. With direct debit, the next year is charged as usual unless you object in writing within the deadline in the letter. Switzerland: the GA Travelcard renews automatically; a reminder comes by post with the annual invoice two months ahead, and with annual payment, online cancellation on swisspass.ch is only possible to the end of the travelcard year.
GA Travelcard: cancel on swisspass.ch (web)
- Open swisspass.ch and log in using your personal details.
- Select «Cancellation information» under the «Travelcard» tab.
- Select «Send cancellation» and follow the instructions.

France: the Navigo Annuel has no minimum term and can be suspended at any time; after 11 consecutive monthly payments, the twelfth month is free. Spain: each Abono Único covers one 30-day period; it cannot be refunded and its dates cannot be changed. For general rules on cancelling online, see cancelling a subscription online.
Tip: For each pass, put two dates in your calendar: the last day to give notice and a reminder one week before.
What do you show at a ticket check?
A ticket on your phone does not always replace ID. The digital KlimaTicket Ö is valid only with official photo ID or an e-card with photo. With SwissPass Mobile you need no card, but you do need official ID. Spain's Abono Único is personal and you must carry your DNI or NIE.
In Switzerland, if you forget your SwissPass and have no SwissPass Mobile, you can buy a temporary card for CHF 5 at a public transport sales point with official ID; if your identity cannot be confirmed on board, staff issue a fine for travelling without a valid ticket.
Flat battery or lost phone: how do you prepare?
The most common failure is a flat battery. On long days, switch on battery saving early; on iPhone, Low Power Mode lowers screen brightness and turns off Background App Refresh, among other things.
iPhone: turn on Low Power Mode
- iPhone 15 and later: open Settings › Battery › Power Mode and turn on Low Power Mode.
- iPhone 14 and earlier: open Settings › Battery and turn on Low Power Mode.
- Faster: swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Centre and tap the battery icon.

Android: turn on Battery Saver
- Open Settings › Battery › Battery Saver.
- Turn it on or set a schedule.
- If your phone uses different menus, check your device manufacturer's support site.

On Android, wording can differ by manufacturer.
In Switzerland the SwissPass card remains a fallback; a replacement card costs CHF 30. To prepare for losing your phone, see preparing for a lost phone.
Delays and disputes: where do you turn?
Under EU rules, if you arrive at least 60 minutes late you can claim 25% of the ticket price for a delay of one to two hours and 50% for two hours or more. Send complaints to the railway company within three months; it must reply within one month, or three months in justified cases. EU countries may exempt urban, suburban and regional services, so local rules matter for season tickets.
In Italy, Trenitalia season ticket holders can claim for Frecce and Intercity delays within one year of the pass expiring. The Trenitalia app does not accept claims for reservations linked to season tickets, so use another channel such as a ticket office or post. Regional claims go to Trenitalia via web form or by post within one year of the delay. When travelling abroad, roaming in Europe explains what mobile data costs if your ticket app needs it.
Common mistakes
- Leaving SwissPass Mobile offline for weeks: without a regular connection it is shown as invalid.
- Ignoring a price notice: Deutsche Bahn cancels Deutschlandticket subscriptions with effect from 31 December 2026 if holders have not agreed by 30 November 2026.
- Giving notice on the 11th and expecting the Deutschlandticket to end that month.
- Waiting for a direct-debit KlimaTicket to lapse: without a written objection, the next year is charged.
- Assuming the Abono Único renews: it simply expires after 30 days.

Common questions
How do I cancel the Deutschlandticket?
Cancel with the company that sold you the ticket, usually in your customer account. Notice must arrive by the 10th of the month; the subscription then ends at the end of that month. If it arrives later, you pay for one more month. Keep the confirmation.
What happens if my phone dies before a ticket check?
You cannot show your ticket, so the operator's rules for passengers without a valid ticket apply. In Switzerland the SwissPass card works as a fallback; if you have forgotten it, you can buy a temporary card for CHF 5 at a public transport sales point with official ID. Charge your phone before long days and use battery saving early.
Does the Swiss GA renew automatically?
Yes, it renews automatically. A reminder arrives by post with the annual invoice two months before. To stop, give notice at least one subscription month ahead; with annual payment, cancelling online on swisspass.ch only works to the end of the travelcard year. From 13 December 2026 the adult 2nd-class GA Travelcard costs CHF 4,095.
