When you live with sleep apnoea, restorative sleep and safe daytime alertness matter. Reports about weight medicines can bring hope and new questions: do I still need my mask? Does a trial headline apply to me? A coordinated plan between your sleep service and weight-treatment team makes those questions easier to address.

Establish which sleep condition you have
In obstructive sleep apnoea, narrowed or blocked airways repeatedly disrupt breathing during sleep. Snoring alone does not establish this diagnosis. Witnessed breathing pauses and marked daytime sleepiness are reasons to seek assessment. Ask for your sleep-test report and an explanation of unfamiliar terms. A different sleep disorder should not quietly be treated as equivalent to OSA simply because both affect the night.
What SURMOUNT-OSA studied
Two randomised trials studied tirzepatide for 52 weeks in adults with obesity and moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea, with or without existing PAP therapy. Sleep-related breathing disturbances fell more than with placebo.
This is relevant evidence for the circumstances studied. It does not promise a cure for everyone or the same effect for every cause of breathing problems during sleep. When reading a report, look for the diagnosis, starting circumstances and study duration before applying a result to your own daily life. Improvement in a group does not provide an individual treatment schedule.
Read EU authorisation precisely
In December 2024, EMA did not recommend a separate OSA indication for Mounjaro. It considered use in the adults with obesity studied to be covered by the existing weight-management indication and added relevant trial data to the product information. The current EU overview lists weight management and type 2 diabetes.
A report about approval in the United States therefore cannot be read as an identical EU authorisation. Listing sleep apnoea as a weight-related condition also does not mean every person with OSA automatically meets the requirements for a weight medicine.
Coordinate existing breathing treatment
If you use CPAP or another prescribed breathing treatment, do not change it solely because you have lost weight or feel better. Your sleep team should assess whether and when an adjustment is appropriate using your progress and suitable follow-up. If the mask is uncomfortable, ask for specific help. Weight treatment does not have to succeed first before practical problems with breathing treatment deserve attention.
Look beyond the measurement
AHI describes breathing events per hour of sleep. Alertness, concentration and whether treatment is manageable also matter in daily life. Note, for example, whether you fall asleep unintentionally during conversations or quiet activities. Avoid safety-critical tasks when markedly sleepy and arrange prompt medical advice. Legal driving requirements depend on your country and need checking locally; a general information page cannot determine individual fitness to drive.
Arrange a shared review
Record who receives sleep-test results, who supervises medicines and who arranges the next assessment. Bring your latest sleep report and a complete medication list. Ask which changes should trigger earlier contact. This turns two parallel treatments into a clearer plan that keeps breathing support, nutrition, tolerability and everyday functioning in view, rather than assuming that one measurement tells the whole story.
How to get started
- Find your latest sleep report and note unfamiliar terms.
- Discuss weight and breathing treatment with both teams.
- Agree when reassessment will happen and which findings it will use.
Common questions
Can I stop using CPAP once I lose weight?
Not without an agreed reassessment. Lower weight or less snoring does not prove that sleep apnoea is adequately controlled.
Do the findings apply to every weight injection?
No. SURMOUNT-OSA studied tirzepatide in a defined patient group. Findings cannot automatically be transferred to other medicines or sleep disorders.
