Diarrhoea becomes more than an inconvenient toilet trip when it keeps recurring or disrupts your day. What matters is whether you can drink, how you feel overall and which other symptoms occur. A short, specific description helps your team decide what assessment or support is appropriate.

Discuss medication decisions with your treating clinician; do not change treatment based on this page. Seek medical help for acute or severe symptoms.
Record the course in simple terms
Note when stools became noticeably looser or watery and roughly how often you need the toilet. Add abdominal pain, vomiting, fever and whether symptoms wake you at night. Compare with your usual pattern without feeling that every detail needs constant measurement.
Wegovy and Mounjaro product information includes diarrhoea. This does not establish that your medicine is the only cause. Other treatments, travel, unfamiliar food or similar symptoms among people around you may also be useful information for the medical assessment.
Consider fluids and your overall condition together
With mild symptoms, try to drink regularly; small sips may be more comfortable if you also feel nauseated. Notice whether drinks stay down. Passing much less urine, persistent dizziness on standing or pronounced weakness may indicate that urgent assessment is needed.
A pharmacist can advise on a suitable oral rehydration solution, which addresses both fluid and salt losses. If you have a heart or kidney condition or a prescribed fluid restriction, seek individual advice. A general drinking target in an article cannot replace a decision based on your health circumstances.
Make food and daily tasks more manageable
Eat as you feel able, choosing simple foods you currently tolerate. Very fatty or spicy meals may be uncomfortable. Deliberately extending a fast is not necessary for the treatment team to take symptoms seriously. If you are barely able to eat, make sure they know.
An infection remains possible, so wash your hands thoroughly and maintain good toilet hygiene. Plan journeys with access to a toilet and temporarily reduce demanding commitments. These practical steps do not treat the cause, but they may make a difficult day easier while you arrange appropriate support.
Match warning signs to the urgency of care
Repeated vomiting with inability to keep fluids down requires urgent medical help the same day. Bloody diarrhoea, markedly reduced urine or rapidly worsening condition also need urgent assessment. Do not wait several days for an appointment already on your calendar when these signs appear.
Severe, persistent or suddenly intense abdominal pain needs immediate medical assessment. Black, tar-like stool, vomiting blood, confusion, severe breathing difficulty or collapse are further reasons for immediate help. Call the local emergency service for a severe condition. Describe the symptoms and medicine without deciding the cause yourself.
Review treatment and other medicines together
If diarrhoea persists, returns or substantially affects eating, drinking and work, contact your team early. Ask when they want an update and what changes should trigger earlier contact. Have a list of prescribed and non-prescription medicines, together with any measures you have already tried.
Anti-diarrhoeal medicines do not suit every cause, particularly with blood or other warning signs. Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether they are appropriate. Severe diarrhoea can also make instructions for other oral medicines relevant. Check their leaflets and seek professional advice rather than taking extra doses yourself.
Three points for your enquiry
- State the start, approximate frequency and additional symptoms.
- Explain whether fluids stay down and urine output has changed.
- Have details of all medicines and measures already tried ready.
Common questions
Should I always wait a few days before asking for help?
No. Urgency depends on your condition and warning signs, not just the number of days. Inability to retain fluids, significant dehydration, blood or severe pain require earlier help. For milder symptoms, agree with your team when another assessment would be appropriate.
Is a lower weight during diarrhoea a treatment success?
A rapid drop may reflect fluid loss and does not reliably show the intended effect of treatment. Do not use the scale as a success test in this situation. Adequate hydration and nutrition, your overall condition and clinical assessment matter more.
