Choose a nail salon: questions about service, hygiene and cost

Describe the appointment you need

State the starting point and goal: for example, short natural nails, existing ordinary polish, one colour and no extensions. Add available time, tasks planned afterwards and changes you do not want. Broad names such as manicure do not explain every included step. Ask for the proposed process and duration so a small colour request does not quietly become another coating system.

Read portfolios and reviews as clues

Look for examples near your preferred length and design, and ask for the salon’s own examples of the requested service. Reviews describing price explanations, questions and fulfilment of the booking are more informative than isolated stars, but remain personal experiences rather than proof of consistent practice. Notice whether photographs show several angles or rely heavily on filters and unusual viewpoints.

Ask understandable hygiene questions

The American Academy of Dermatology advises checking clean workspaces and hand hygiene, asking about tool cleaning and avoiding cuticle cutting or forceful pushing. Ask how tools are processed between clients and which items are single-use. Gloves in a photograph or equipment in the background do not answer that question. You cannot conduct a full hygiene audit, but can judge whether an explanation is specific and consistent with visible practice.

Discuss the system and removal together

Ask for the actual product and a plain explanation of the procedure, later removal and aftercare. Request access to product details after the appointment. Explain previous reactions or current symptoms; a cosmetic booking does not replace medical assessment. A universal tolerance guarantee is not realistic. Clear boundaries and answers matter more than absolute safety promises.

Record the complete price

Check whether existing-material removal, repairs, extra length and individual designs are included. Ask when any extra cost will be discussed, what follow-up involves and what eventual full removal costs. If the work can only be assessed in person, agree on consultation and price approval before extras begin. Compare equivalent services rather than entry prices.

Start with a manageable first visit

You need not change length, material and complex design together. Agree when to review shape or a colour sample. Questions are legitimate, and you can postpone a decision or speak up immediately about discomfort or a departure from the brief. Afterwards assess communication and fulfilment of agreements as well as appearance.

Mark key criteria as clarified, open or unsuitable. Do not let many decorative advantages cancel a fundamental concern through an artificial score. If two salons meet the brief, access, appointment times and total cost may decide. Keep the quotation and request, then add concrete observations for future bookings.
